Today started like any other day –woke up, made and ate oatmeal, fed the cat, got ready for a job interview. Okay, so not like any other day. Today, I got interviewed –at MSI Computers, a stereotypical corporation to some people, but God-sent for me.
I’ve been stressing with finances these past couple of months and have been resorting to mooching off of my roommates’ leftovers and $3 generic oatmeal from Albertsons (which will probably feed me breakfast for the next two months). Even though eating habits changed, I’ve been struggling with giving up other expenses. Clearance rack, unnecessary driving (gas), and cheap gifts made me realize what my priorities were. $80 on a pair of pants that could’ve probably feed a whole family of three for a week, $40 for a pair of boots that I ‘totally’ needed, and already brainstorming on what gifts to buy for the holidays. But not everything was meaningless spending! I’ve also registered and paid for classes for next semester, signed up for one intersession class ($675!), and bought my tickets back to the Bay –all three in which are totally on top of my-list-of-things-I’m-willing-to-spend.
Back to the point: After this afternoon, I was able to lie all of those worries/spending aside, because there was hope again –income. What a beautiful word. Even though it was only an interview, let me fancy myself this idea for a bit. Getting experience at a corporation that is in the process of developing a pr department while getting paid, getting school internship credits through this paid internship, and building up my resume. Shoot. Besides school, getting this part-time is almost laying the foundations of my career plans. If I’m speaking too soon, it’s all more the effort in making my hopes into reality.
It seems as if all my life’s learning spirals down to this one point. “Keeping myself accountable,” and “growing up” becomes an epiphany, because those mentalities visage a whole different degree. Have you ever had those moments? Where “finishing the work” is not only completing the given task, but finishing early with more than what the original task called for? Those are good realizations. Good moments where you know you’ve grown up.
As for the pr position at MSI, I’m hopeful. Though money could be a large portion of that result, experience and opportunity is what I’m hoping to get most out of it.
